Gutters
Get the water off the roof and away from the house.
Gutters and downspouts matched to the roof they drain, on their own or alongside a roof or exterior project, and emptied away from the foundation.
Worth a look
Signs your gutters are not keeping up.
Walk around the house during a steady rain. Most gutter problems show themselves then.
- Water over the front edge
- Water sheets over the gutter in an ordinary rain. Clogs, too few downspouts, or a gutter too small for the roof above it.
- Sagging or pulling away
- A gap behind the gutter, or a run that dips between hangers. The fasteners are failing, or the wood behind them is.
- Drips at seams and corners
- Leaks at joints and end caps, usually with a streak on the siding underneath.
- Stains and peeling paint
- Streaks down the siding and peeling paint on the fascia or soffit mean water is getting behind the gutter.
- Soft or dark fascia
- Rot in the board the gutter hangs from. It has to be repaired before a new gutter goes up.
- Water at the foundation
- Washed-out mulch, puddles at the downspouts, or a damp basement after a storm.
How the system works
Follow the water from the roof to the yard.
A gutter is one part of a path. When any part is wrong, the water ends up behind the fascia or at the foundation, so we look at all four.
-
The roof edge
The drip edge and the back of the gutter should put water into the gutter, not behind it and down the fascia.
-
The gutter
Sized for the roof that drains into it, hung firmly, and pitched toward the outlets so water does not sit.
-
The downspouts
Enough of them, and large enough, to empty the gutter in a heavy downpour. Too few is a common reason gutters overflow.
-
The discharge
Where the downspout lets go. The water should land away from the house, on ground that slopes away from it.
Gutters and the rest of the house
Gutters rarely fail on their own.
The roof above them and the weather around them usually have a say.
-
Replacing the roof?
The gutters get worked around at the roof edge during a replacement, which makes it a natural time to replace or rehang them.
Roofing -
Dented after hail?
Dents in gutters and downspouts also help show how hard a storm hit the rest of the house. Start with an inspection.
Storm Restoration -
Ice at the eaves?
Ice dams usually start with heat escaping into the attic, not with the gutters. New gutters alone will not stop them.

Do you also replace gutters?
Yes. RYDGE installs replacement gutters, downspouts, and A-M Gutter Guard systems alongside residential roofing work.
